October 2010

The fall colours here are spectacular. Last year because it was a hot dry summer, most of the leaves turned brilliant yellows and browns with some reds.

Our region is blessed with many maple trees. We know that our fall foliage will always display a myriad of colour. Recording its beauty will be your challenge..

We plant our bulbs and put the garden to bed for the winter.

Fireplace - Island View B&B 1000 Islands Canada

The temperature has begun to drop. At night you can smell the aroma of real fireplaces burning wood.

November, is the time to reflex on the summer and prepare for the winter.

It is the time when we are thinking about Christmas parties and how we can decorate the house for the festive season.

It is the time to get out to the fitness centre and tune up the body.

When there is good weather, bundle oneself up with a warm jacket and walk the paths and sightsee along the parkway roads.

The leaves have all fallen and again we can see the houses that were hidden by the leaves since spring.

A well prepared dinner, welcome guests and intelligent conversation is always great in November.

December 2010

Victor's Birthday
 December 15

It kicks off the party season!

Oh... December... the children are excited about the coming of Santa!

People are up on their ladders decorating their houses with lights creating a fairyland that goes on into the new year.

At the Art Centre in Brockville there are live stage productions, concerts, and performers.

On Christmas Eve, the churches are filled. Singing voices and pealing church bells fill the air.

On New Year's Eve, the community of Brockville hosts their annual First Night celebration. The churches host local talent.

At the stroke of midnight, people come together on the Court House Green to sing Auld Lang Syne. Hugs and kisses abound as the Brockville City Hall bell rings 12 times welcoming in the New Year .

January 2011

Sometimes the St Lawrence River in the 1000 Islands Region freezes over in January.

Those who don't go south get out  their winter toys...skates,   cross country skis and  snowmobiles

The more adventurous fishermen, missing the taste of freshly caught fish, can get out their ice fishing gear. Try your luck in the bays of the St Lawrence. At the B&B - when you catch it - we cook it!

The Parkway bikeway turns into a snowmobile path.  I bet there is no other place in Canada where snowmobiles are used to get to a Casino!

February 2011

In this area, we do get some snow. in 2008 it was cold but we did get lots of snow at the end of the month.

In fact, many homeowners did broke many of their snow blowers. Global warming? Maybe... But the politicians were not happy about their snow budgets!

February is a good month to tuck yourself at Island View.  How about a romantic Valentine's retreat for you and your special person.

At Island View, it is a good month for Diana to throw some pots and make some nice meals for guests.

March 2011

Early in March or late in February depending on the ice conditions, the St Lawrence Seaway Authority and the Canadian Coast Guard Ice breaker fleet open the Seaway to shipping.

You would think that God had suddenly revisited the River. People on both the American and Canadian side of the border look forward to this event as the rebirth of the river.

Soon we know that the River will be full of life again as we see the flocks of geese and ducks fly overhead and the birds again at the feeders.

April 2011

Get out those pots and plant some seeds. It is April and soon at the end of the month the ground will be dry enough to start raking and cleaning up the yards.

Gardens need to be planned and of course looked to see what plants lasted the winter and need to be replaced.

If the weather gets up into the 20's it is start of the fix, repair and paint time on the property.

The ocean boats are back on the river and when they come
down river heading east fully laden we know our economy is flourishing.

April showers bring May flowers and we better be ready.

Lilacs at Island View B&B 1000 Islands Canada

First comes the Magnolias, then the flowering Crabapple trees, and then the Lilac trees with their subtle fragrances.

On the first weekend in May, the Brockville Farmers' Market opens.  They have this year's crop of maple syrup and by mid mouth fresh asparagus and rhubarb.

It won't belong before fresh strawberry and rhubarb pies are in the oven and on the dessert plates in the 1000 Islands Region!

June 2011

In June, the people who live here are busy buying plants, cutting the grass and planting their gardens.

Yards sales are in abundance in Gananoque and Brockville.

The Farmers' Market now has freshly harvested asparagus and  strawberries.

The river is coming alive as tour boats and pleasure crafts are seen in abundance in the 1000 Islands.

The long winter is finally over and the people are in the mood to celebrate.

Flowers at Island View B&B 1000 Islands Canada

 Diana's birthday
July 4 - and all the USA celebrates

Bring on the lazy hazy days of summer and the  big happy birthday party for Canada in Ottawa

The restaurants in the area have their patios open and it is time to just sit outdoors relax and enjoy.

Take the private tour of the river with Dave Williams and you will see things that you never knew existed especially if you lived in a city all your life. Waterfowl wildlife abounds as the baby ducks and geese grow.

The flowers in the gardens are ablaze with lots of colour and eating summer fresh veggies make your mouth water when in summer salads.

What's Happening
in the 1000 Islands Region?

We are right into the middle of the lazy days of summer when the working people are on holidays and want to get away from the hot city and get some fresh air.

The night sky here is almost devoid of ambient light. We can clearly see the stars in the sky as we sit out on our porch in the warm evening night and listen to the cicadas sing their songs about the warm weather
and watch the fireflies.

It is a great time to just get in your car and take your small children to the beaches at either Browns Bay or Mallorytown Landing.

For those more into physical things try horseback riding or biking along the Parkway.

September 2011

In early September it is the height of the harvest.  Fresh tomatoes just cut from the vine and made into a BLT on some really neat bread. Crispy cucumbers, freshly picked roasted potatoes with barbeque steak.

There is nothing like sweet corn taken from the stalks that morning and cooked for lunch.  For dessert or in a fruit salad - apples, sweet melons. It is all produced in this region and appears on our breakfast and dinner plates.

Sometime during mid September there is the hint of frost in the air signaling the changing of the colour of the leaves and the start of the our spectacular fall season.

A great time for a hike in the woods along Jones Creek near Island View B&B.
