In October Gianni and Rosita dropped in from Firenze, Italy. Rosita’s father had been a forestry official in Tuscany. I took them on a hike, and we examined our trees in minute detail. October is colour season, and it thrilled them. I taught them trees and leaves, we discussed differences, and finally we picked some luscious red ones to bring home. That night I waxed them, and they travelled back to Italy tucked in a book. Canadian leaves, preserved forever.

(I kept one. It has been scanned, and now decorates
the upper left corner on each page of my website!)
